Inventing - Tony's tips

Tony listens to other inventors because knowledge is the key to wisdom and you never know what someone might tell you and whether it is valuable or not till the time comes for you to make a decision to build on your idea.

COVER YOURSELF
If you've got a great idea keep it quiet. You can only get a patent if your invention is a secret until you apply.
LOOK AROUND YOU
Maybe some one else has thought of the invention you have just thought of So check out the Patent office at www.patent.gov.uk. Or you might like to take a look at another government backed website, www.intellectual-property.gov.uk, which has links to lots of other relevant sites.
USE YOUR HEAD
Patents are only for real inventions & definitely not for the obvious ideas.
CHECK THE MARKET
If no one is interested in your invention it will be practically impossible to find someone to develop or fund the invention.
THE FUTURE OF YOUR IDEA
If you can get your invention manufactured, package, advertise& distributed, a Patent or Patent application can be licensed or sold.
THE BIG WORLD
A UK Patent only covers you in this country. To stop people from other countries copying your idea, you must get a Patent in their country.
SEEK HELP
It's too easy to take the wrong way without the right help or advice. Only a Patent agent is qualified to fight for your best interest. www.cipa.org.uk
BE CAREFUL
Some Invention promoters want to take your money and run off. Never give them a penny if you're not too sure of their credentials.
YOUR FRIENDS
Inventors stick together. There are some inventors out there who will give you good advice. James Dyson's Autobiography "Against The Odds" is highly recommended.
